The Word Detective is taking a break, and will return in April.

For the past ten years, The Word Detective website and our archives of more than 1,300 columns have been a free resource for the gazillions of readers from around the world who visit this site every day.  But the continued existence of this site depends on the support of the subset of our readers who actually pony up small amounts of moolah to cover our costs (bandwidth, hosting fees, coffee, cat chow, etc.).  If you are among the approximately 1.75 million readers who have never quite gotten around to subscribing to The Word Detective via Email newsletter, please take a moment to gaze deep into your soul and ponder the warm glow of harmony with the universe you'll feel after sending us a measly fifteen bucks.

If you believe that The Word Detective Online should continue, please contribute by subscribing to our newsletter for $15 per year.  Subscribers receive my columns at least a month before they are posted on this website.

I am setting an initial fundraising goal of twenty new subscribers per month, and, since it'll be either great fun or really depressing to keep track, here's the classic thermometer graphic, which I will update every week or so.

You can read about how subscriptions work and sign up for a standard subscription (or Lifetime Sub) here.  If you'd rather just cut to the chase and send a general contribution of any amount, use the button below.
